why we give
Giving is fundamentally an act of worship and stewardship, rooted in the recognition that all resources ultimately belong to God (1 Chronicles 29:14; Psalm 24:1). Believers are encouraged to provide financial support for the local church's ministry and the global spread of the gospel, following the New Testament principle of regular, proportionate giving to ensure those who preach the word are supported (1 Corinthians 16:1–2; 1 Timothy 5:17–18). Furthermore, generosity is an essential expression of compassion toward the poor and vulnerable, which the Bible describes as a direct service to Christ himself (Proverbs 19:17; Matthew 25:40). Ultimately, Christians are called to give not out of legalistic obligation, but with a cheerful and willing heart that reflects gratitude for God's grace (2 Corinthians 9:6–7).
Tithing—defined as giving ten percent of one’s income—is an act of obedience and trust that recognizes God as the ultimate provider of all resources (Leviticus 27:30). Rooted in the Old Testament, the tithe was established to support the ministry of the priesthood and maintain the house of God, ensuring that spiritual work and community care could continue (Numbers 18:21; Malachi 3:10; as well as protection from the devourer Mal. 3:11). While some interpret the New Testament as shifting from a strict legal requirement to a model of voluntary, cheerful generosity (2 Corinthians 9:7), Jesus teaches that tithing should be practiced without neglecting the "weightier matters" of justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23). Ultimately, tithing serves as a spiritual discipline intended to teach believers to always put God first in their lives (Deuteronomy 14:23).
